Green ICT Usage Reduces Carbon Emissions

So far, we think the way we show love and concern for the environment is merely a movement to plant trees, or a leisurely walk and bicycle relaxed this latter being trend in. It turned out that the Information Technology Industry and Telecommunications (ICT) was accounted for 2% - 3% of carbon disposal. Therefore, it was time to be strategic business approach to the green platform that the company should be run continuously in the company-company ICT Indonesia.

This conclusion is drawn environmental experts and practitioners in the telecommunications industry an international conference themed "Green ICT for Asia" held recently in Jakarta. Implementation and use of green technology (Green ICT) is believed to reduce more than 15% of total global carbon emissions

At an international conference which was attended by no less than 250 telecom industry players including representatives of 30 international telecommunications companies also revealed the fact that the role of the ICT industry in Asia, including Indonesia will be increasingly important as the growth of ICT in the region and contribute in a very rapid growth of consumerism the world. Almost every day new emerging products and services in the world of ICT such as mobile phones, computers and other electronic gadgets

Unfortunately, attention to environmental awareness efforts in the telecommunications industry was still neglected in Indonesia. Chairman of the Indonesian Telematics Society (Mastel)  Setyanto P Santoso, said the environmental awareness movement to be defined only as a form of corporate concern in social situations and is therefore the activity of CSR (Corporate Social
Responsibility) or other philantropic programs

It is not surprising that green program is only a part of the CSR program, not integrated within a frame work of sustainable business (sustainable). Though there is business value benefits for the company.
Environmental awareness efforts or commonly known as the "Go Green" indeed has spread in various movements and community activities. However, the environmental awareness movements more manifested in efforts to improve environmental conditions and pollution reduction activities such as planting trees, mass movement and  bike leisurely.

With the conference is expected to change the mindset and policy direction of the perpetrators of ICT, so the program Green ICT is not just a part of CSR activities into the program itself but the company is continuously executed as part of company policy concern for the environment.(Adapted from Pikiran Rakyat Newspaper)

  1. Thanks for bringing up the ICT for Green Asia (ICTforgreenasia.org,1 Nov 2011) conference but there was also the 2nd Green ICT Conference (http://www.greenict-id.com, 3 Nov 2011) which was part of Indocomtec exhibition.

Yes I fully agree with your assessment that Green ICT (both Green for ICT and Green by ICT or Low-carbon enablement by ICT in transport, building and other industry) can be expected to change the mindset and policy direction of the corporate/government/NGO users of ICT, ICT sector itself as well as ordinary users.

And yes, a corporate/organisational program on Green ICT/ICT sustainability should not be just part of CSR activities but embedded into the organisation itself. And the company/organisation should continuously improve its overall sustainability performance as part of its core policy concern for the environment.

One Green by ICT event coming up in Jakarta that might be of interest particularly for those interested in ICT for smart-buildings is the Greenright Conference, 11-13 April 2012, Jakarta. Check out http://www.greenright.gbcindonesia.org.
